Course Overview
Semester I
English II
Course Description ______________________________________________________
We will tackle several literary works—both fictional and informational— in order to enhance students’ critical reading and analytical skills. We will take an inquiry-based approach to all new content in which students study a topic through exploration, allowing them to question what is unknown and challenge current perceptions. Through these methods, students will engage in activities that allow them to communicate freely and openly with their fellow classmates, broadening their perspectives by considering those of others. Additionally, we will be covering grammatical concepts, vocabulary, and writing skills. We will be doing all this in preparation for the English II EOC.

Work Expectations:
Classroom Rules:
1. Be respectful – Treat others as you would like to be treated, listen actively, tolerate different viewpoints, show interest, help those who need it, and practice common courtesy.
2. Be on time – You are expected to be seated and doing your warm up when the bell rings. School-wide tardy policy applies.
3. Be prepared - Make sure you come to class with ALL required materials. Without them, you jeopardize your opportunity for learning and success. (Once books are issued, they should be brought to class every day unless otherwise noted).
4. Be responsible - I am a firm believer in taking responsibility for one’s actions. You need to accept the consequences for choices you make.
5. School Rules - Follow them! If you have any questions about the school-wide policies, please let me know.
Classroom Procedures:
A. Beginning Class: When you arrive to the classroom, follow all instructions on the board. You must be seated and doing your warm up before the bell. You are not allowed to leave during the first and last 15 minutes of class.
B. Ending Class: At the close of the lesson, I will signal you to wrap up. This may include putting dictionaries back on the shelf, throwing away trash, and handing in assignments. You will not leave the classroom until everyone is seated and silent. You are not allowed to leave the room during the last 15 minutes of class.
C. Speaking: Raise your hand and wait to be called on when you wish to speak in class.
Speaking out of turn deprives your peers of the chance to participate.
D. Bathroom You will receive 4 bathroom passes each quarter. They do not roll over.
E. Movement Activities such as sharpening pencils or obtaining paper should take place before the bell rings. Wandering around the room is inappropriate and unnecessary.
F. Food/Drink: No food or drink. A bottle of water is the ONLY exception.
G. Absences/Make-Up: STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR OBTAINING NOTES AND WORK MISSED DUE TO AN ABSENCE. If you are confused about an assignment or makeup-work, see me before or after school to inquire about it. Taking class time to ask me about make-up work will not be tolerated. When in doubt, consult a reliable peer. You are responsible for scheduling to make up a quiz/test before or after school within FIVE school days of the absence.
H. Homework: Homework will be posted and collected daily.
I. Late Work: Assignments that are turned in late will not be given full credit. If a student becomes ill or is planning a trip, it is his/her responsibility to see that
his/her work reaches me.
J. Tardy Policy: South Mecklenburg has a school-wide tardy policy. See the website for more details.
K. Textbooks: You will have a classroom textbook and an online log in.
L. Heading Papers: Each paper you turn in should have the following information clearly visible at the top of the page: your full name, the date, the class period, and the title of the assignment. .
M. Extra Credit: I do not give extra credit.
P. Lost Handouts: We will be utilizing online classroom services called “Schoology” and “Google Classroom.” All students will be using their Schoology account so that they have access to handouts, materials, the calendar, etc. Google Classroom will be utilized to turn in assignments electronically. *If you do not have access to technology/internet, please let me know!*
The syllabus is subject to change at any time without notice.

Work Expectations:
- I expect all work to be your own. You must take responsibility for your own academic progress (i.e: read what I assigned, do your homework, etc.). Cheating, borrowing other’s ideas, and plagiarism will be dealt with following South Mecklenburg High School policies.
- Work should be turned in on time. This ensures fair and accurate grading. You will receive 80% of the earned credit the first day it is late. The second day it is late you will receive 70% credit od the earned work. 3+ days late will receive 50% credit of the earned work. You must fill out a late slip and place the assignment in the appropriate late box. If you are ABSENT, you will be expected to complete any previously mentioned formal assessment the day you return.
- I will be unable to print papers for you this semester. You can print in the media center. Keep in mind that computers malfunction all the time. A printer that is out of ink is not an excuse for not having your work. Do your work in enough time to avoid technological problems messing up your grade. ALWAYS E-MAIL WORK TO YOURSELF OR PUT IT IN AN ONLINE DROPBOX!
